Conran: Pick of the month and a vintage ‘something for the weekend’

This month’s quick staff pick: a little piece of architectural inspiration from Conran & Partners 3d visualiser Daniel Gill.

My pick of the week is this striking micro home in Japan and is an amazing example of efficient design for small-space living.

Designed by Tokyo-based Atelier Tekuto, the faceted three-story home is located on a small corner lot near the center of Tokyo.

Abstractly titled “Reflection of Mineral“, the home is a study in small spaces, simple finishes, and day lighting through the use of transparent and opaque surfaces that suffuse the interior with light.

It could just be the camera lens but it has an amazing ‘tardis’ like quality!

Conran:..Keeping it Green…

Back in August we talked about meeting some great people from Scrapstores UK, the charity that collects all that lovely stuff we just don’t need anymore….old fabric samples, leftover paint, large rolls of paper that’s the wrong colour…and stores them for distribution to children’s and community projects.

After our first deluge of stuff which we took down to their launch event on Potter’s Fields near Conran head office we had quite a bit more to get rid of 6-odd months later…

Just a quick phone call though and those helpful people at Scrapstores were on hand with a van to pick it up – ready to take it away to its next creative incarnation.

Conran: Gear up for the new Conran Shop windows celebrating 100 years of Michelin House

You may well have read about this year being the 100th year Anniversary of Michelin house both on this blog and in the media in general. Here’s a nice little piece in The Telegraph for example. Such an iconic building cannot fail to draw attention and interest.

To celebrate further The Conran Shop on Fulham Road – itself contained within Michelin House – has unveiled an amazing new window display using vintage cars and objects from the Michelin archives.

See more photos on The Conran Shop blog and read this fascinating post about the display created by Betsy Simth, Head of Visual Merchandising, and her team.

Conran: Conran Singh uncovered…

We are very excited about our brand new digital venture – Conran Singh.

It’s an entirely new design-led business within the Conran Group that will give brands strategic advice and interactive design thinking.

Stephen Barber joins Daljit Singh as Strategy Director – over a coffee at The Design Museum he tells us a bit more about what’s going on at Conran’s newest company…

How would you describe CONRAN Singh?
We’re an interactive design consultancy. We’re convinced that design should be elegant, simple and effective regardless of the medium and we’re paying special attention to how digital services and utilities can make life easier for people.

Do you think it’s possible for a company whose history is so firmly rooted in retail, product design and architecture to extend its reach to the digital world?
I really don’t think it’s such a stretch. Most retailers – Conran included – are already selling things on the web, and they’ll be selling them through social networks, mobile devices and TV before too much longer. That innate knowledge of knowing how to sell things works just as well on a screen as it does in a physical shop.

And product designers are all over this too – one of the things I’ve noticed during my career in digital is the diverse backgrounds of the people you meet working in agencies. Many of the digital designers I know started out by studying product design, and then felt that it translated over to this new medium. If you think about it, designing for the screen has a lot of things in common with designing real-world products: we think about the tactility of the interface – how it feels, how it looks, and how it behaves; and then we think about the things that are going to attract people to it in the first place.

As for architecture, it’s clear that when you talk about digital now you’re not just talking about people sitting in front of screens in their homes or at work, but out there in the world, doing the things that they’ve always done. We just have many more digital ‘helpers’ doing things for us – phones, laptops, apps – and these are starting to shape how we interact with the built environment. We’ve seen lots of people trying out new things in retail environments recently (check out this nice prototype by a team from Hyper Island: http://vimeo.com/18499643 ) but I’d suggest that we’ll start to see real digital utility and service start to integrate with the very fabric of the buildings we occupy before too much longer…

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re busy creating the DNA for the company, really. I mean, we’re having all sorts of interesting conversations with other businesses about how we can help them, but we’re also at that point in starting something where what we decide now is going to influence the next few years of our working lives. So it’d better be good!

What’s been the best thing you have done so far in your digital career?
Some of the best things I’ve done have never even seen the light of day, that’s the sad reality of working in a digital agency. I’ve helped one of our largest education companies redefine what it means to be a qualified learner by thinking about measuring learning differently – that was one of my favourite things, but the proposition we worked on was never taken up.

Probably the best thing recently has been working with a Middle Eastern airline to help them design the best airline web site in the world. Did you know that if you’re a first class passenger, you get to take your falcon on board with you?!

What’s the most exciting thing about being part of CONRAN?
I love the fact that you’re working within this immense design heritage when you sit in the CONRAN building. It’s everywhere around you, and our opportunity is to start to pull together some of the strands of the different businesses and tie them into a single consolidated offering that takes the best bits of product design, branding, architecture, digital thinking, and mashes them up into a unique, problem-solving design consultancy. Daljit has his own inimitable way of describing this: if you see him, just ask him about his döner kebab…

We’ve also heard tell of a brand new CONRAN Singh blog, all about goings on in digital design and communication, coming soon…so watch this space….

Conran: Design a great 2011!

With Christmas just around the corner we thought we would tell you a little bit more about how our fabulous Conran Christmas card 2010 came into being.

Santi Tonsukha from Studio Conran explains…

First up was Brainstorming  - a truly collaborative process. Studio Conran staff – and a few others from around the Conran Group – spent an hour coming up with tons of ideas. Some are whimsical. Some are fun and exciting. Some are outrageous and over the top.

We then picked three that we thought could be achieved within the time frame and budget that we had.

The Pencil

The Conran world is a creative one. We thought the pencil is a great representation of who we are. Even with today’s technologies, pencil and paper are the starting tools for designers.

Also, in today’s economy, a gift that is not wasteful seems appropriate.

We started thinking about what kind of pencils we would like to give away. Coloured pencil? Round? Hexagonal? One thing we knew from the beginning is that we wanted to incorporate the Conran blue in some way. In the end we picked a blue one that was made of recycled CD cases.

Packaging

We explored different materials and decided to use corrugated cardboard for packaging. What’s not to like about recycled corrugated cardboard? It’s lightweight. Protective. Affordable and Environmental-friendly.

The motif on the cardboard is inspired by grid paper that designers/architects often use. The plus shape also goes well with our positive message “Design a great 2011”

In short, we think it is a perfect little Christmas/New year gift from Conran that is thoughtful, fun, and reflects the company’s philosophy. We hope you agree….

Conran: The Art of Pitching

Part of any design process in business is pitching for, and winning, projects – and who better to pass on some tricks of the trade than our own CEO Roger Mavity, Author of ‘Life’s a Pitch’

We thought it might be fun but also enormously beneficial for our team to learn a bit more about this persuasive art, so last Tuesday night we gathered in Terence’s Apartment here at 22 Shad Thames to see how it’s done.

After a very engaging presentation from Roger names were put into a hat and we were split into teams and assigned a topic to get our teeth into on which to base our pitch.

Here’s a taster of the topics the teams were given…

FOR and AGAINST

The best place for a Brit to go on holiday is Britain

The better technology becomes the worse communication becomes

Sport is being ruined because there is too much money in it

Good transport in London depends on getting everyone on their bike

The follow up ‘Presenting the pitches’ takes place on November 15th. So watch this space to see who wins and a full report!

If you want to know more about the book click here to see an interview with Roger and co-author Steven Bayley.

Conran: Helping to create a ‘Home from Home’ with charity CLIC Sargent

Conran & Partners has been working with CLIC Sargent for the last year on its new London project, Paul’s House, which opened for families this September.

CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people and Paul’s House is a row of heritage listed terraces with a difference – it’s a ‘Home from Home’ providing free accommodation for families of children and young people having treatment for cancer and leukaemia in London.

The charity contacted us to see if we would like to be involved in designing the interiors of their new residence and, eagerly, we said yes!

The idea was to knock together several existing terraces to form one large shared house with a series of bedrooms connected to communal areas such as kitchens, play areas and TV rooms.

We agreed to focus primarily on the common areas of the houses, and as part of our role we specified all furniture, fittings and finishes in our allocated rooms, while the base building architect took care of the bedrooms and bathrooms.

The challenges involved in working on a project like this is to create a feeling of personality and ‘home’ comfort in a communal space while being ever mindful of the need for robust, affordable furnishings.

Together with a great team at CLIC Sargent, especially the diligent Project Manager Anna Kendall, we brought the project to fruition. We are all happy that we have created a peaceful environment where families can easily relax together.

Travelling to and from hospital while your child has cancer treatment can be exhausting and expensive, particularly in London. Paul’s House is located just one minute’s walk from University College Hospital, so families will no longer have to make long journeys to and from the hospital when their child is having treatment. It also provides an alternative for those who chose to sleep at hospital to remain close to their child.

Paul’s House is open now and if you’d like to contribute to this very worthwhile charity please visit www.clicsargent.org.uk

Conran: Potters Fields watch: The Big Draw – Something for the weekend!

It’s always good to see the value of drawing is still upheld by many people despite the predominance of digitally aided art and design tools. After all it’s often the best way of getting ideas down onto paper and working through problems – and where would we be without Terence’s sketches of famous pieces of furniture like the Glove  or Matador chairs and other iconic designs from the last half a century…?

Every October The Big Draw brings hundreds of drawing initiatives to galleries and streets all over the world.

Launched in 2000, it has has grown from 180 events in the UK to over 1500 worldwide. The Campaign aims to use drawing to connect visitors with museum and gallery collections, urban and rural spaces – and the wider community – in new and enjoyable ways.

As part of the event today, on Potters Fields – sandwiched between Tower Bridge and the London Mayor’s Office, and 10 mins from Conran HQ – trestle tables were strewn with vast rolls of paper whilst people of all ages adorned them with colourful murals, scribbles and sketches.

Performers struck a pose ready to be drawn by passers-by and pictures of seasonal produce – bold forms in bright colours – fluttered from a washing line in the October breeze, all proving people still enjoy good old fashioned drawing as much as ever.

Having said all that about the digital stuff not always being so good there is this very fun game you can play online.

Here’s a couple of efforts from a few of us here and here but please note – this in no way an indication of the talents or tendancies of the Conran Group!
