Friday Tip: La drapeau tricolore

This Saturday Frenchmen all over the world will celebrate La Fëte National, Bastille Day.

We at Conran are committed Francophiles – indeed, a certain Chairman spends rather a lot of his time there – so this week’s tip is unashamedly Gallic.

Pop over to Boundary, Prescott & Conran‘s hotel and restaurant complex in Redchurch Street, where they are rolling out the red, white and blue in style…

Conran: A lunch to launch the Conran iPod dock

Last Friday the festive season came early as the latest in our CONRAN branded products was officially unveiled to the press. Our partners in this project, Armour Home, really know how to throw a good party.

A few of the Conran team, along with a vast number of journalists from Technological and Lifestyle titles alike converged on Boundary Restaurant for a wonderful meal and some very spirited quiz answering. Someone really should stop Glenn McClelland, the Armour Group MD from giving away all the answers. Still, our team wasnt complaining.

Despite all the jolliness the event of course had a serious side – to showcase some great new products – amoung them the Conran iPod dock – the first product in the Conran Audio range. Everyone seemed very impressed.

It was also a great opportunity for Terence to present an award to Santiago Haboud, winner of the Tivoli Audio Prize.

The prize relates to a worldwide design competition to produce a design to celebrate Tivoli Audio’s tenth anniversary and new ‘Model 10′ DAB Radio. The overall winner receives not only a cash prize but also has their winning design displayed on a giant billboard in New York’s Times Square throughout December 2010, including the world famous New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The competition received many thousands of entries from all around the world and Santiago came 1st out of the UK entries and was placed 3rd worldwide.
Terence was happy to take the microphone and congratulate him for his idea ‘Crayons’ which he called ‘Charming, clever and full of fun’

They will be meeting again in June at the graduation ceremony for the Royal College of Art, where Santiago studies and where Terence, always a huge supporter of education in design, is currently Provost.

Conran: Endeavour to be better by design…

An excellent article by Lou Cooper in Marketing Week today talks about how brands are using design to set them apart from the competition.

In it our very own CEO Roger Mavity explains that design is not just about making things look good, but about adding value for consumers..

We try to design things in a way that radiates our basic belief that intelligent design improves quality of life. It doesn’t make a difference if it’s a well-designed store or building, it’s the fact that the design is intelligent, sensitive and creative. If that gives functionality to the user, then it’s good design, and that’s what we believe in

A prime example of that is our Boundary project in Shoreditch, designed by Conran & Partners - it’s a converted Victorian warehouse which houses three restaurants and bars, 12 hotel rooms and a bakery. As always our aim has been to make each project functional, yet exciting.

Conran: Winter Warmers at Boundary

With November just around the corner and Christmas approaching fast it suddenly feels very much like winter is already upon us.

Henrik Ritzen and the rest of the team at Boundary Restaurant have plenty of ideas to keep us fed and entertained as the cold weather rolls in, including introducing hearty French regional favourites, including a fabulous cassoulet, to their menu to sit alongside the more elegant French classics.

The stage is also set for Autumn Game and for truffle season – starting on the 4th Nov…

In fact, if you fancy a taster head down to Boundary on Wednesday, 3rd November for  a unique opportunity to meet one of the world’s top winemakers and enjoy a special white truffle and Italian red wine dinner.

Mon Dieu!

Henrik Ritzen, Boundary Restaurant Head Chef

Paul’s Postcard from the seaside

Some of our architectural team from Conran & Partners are lucky enough to be based in our Brighton office and not have to squash into a crowd of black clad commuters in the bowels of London Bridge station every morning like the rest of us. Now there’s a place we would like to redesign.

Paul Zara is one lucky such soul and a Director at that. He’s our correspondent from Conran & Partners and he’ll be keeping us up to date with all the happenings at ‘C&P’.

Our Architects and Interior designers have had a busy 12 months what with Boundary opening and new restaurants Lutyens and Hix wowing the Fleet Street crowd and the Selfridges shoppers respectively. But behind the scenes there are a whole host of other projects that are keeping us busy…

Here’s what Paul has to say in his first postcard from the South Coast…

The architects and interior designers at Conran & Partners are working on some amazing projects, and in a world full of gloom there are some signs of growth that can only make you optimistic.
Green Man Lane is a massive estate regeneration project bringing high quality design to over 700 new homes, affordable, shared ownership and private sale.  We are transforming West Ealing just as we did at Butlers Wharf twenty years ago.  Move there now!
We are also designing two new pavilion buildings on the waterfront in Greenwich, ready for the Olympics,
And sexy private houses like this one in Sussex (photos by Jim Stephenson, one of the Brighton possee), and another private house in the beach in Hove right next door to David Walliams, Heather Mills and Fat Boy Slim/Zoë Ball (too secret for pics).

Meanwhile over in Japan Richard Doone is still overseeing the massive Futako Tamagawa project in Tokyo.  It’s one of the world’s largest construction projects so we should be really proud.

More on that next week.

Not just any architecture, this is Conran architecture
